Meal Services and Social Engagement in Assisted Living

When was the last time you had a meal by yourself? For most of us, mealtime is a social outing where we can interact with our friends and loved ones.

But how do social meals work when you're in assisted living in Carroll, Iowa? According to the Iowa Attorney General, there are more than one million Iowans aged 50 or older. We're also in the top five for the oldest population!

With so many seniors, understanding meals in Carroll senior living communities is vital. We're here to help you make the most of your senior dining options. Read on for a full guide to elderly social activities and meals.

Understanding Meal Services

Before we go any further, it's important to understand how assisted living services handle meals. These communities often approach meals in a similar way, though there are some differences to note.

Many communities will homogenize mealtimes to make it so that most people are eating at once. Rather than setting a strict time, meals will often occur within a "range," so to speak. For example, breakfast may be served from 8 to 11, while lunch takes over afterward.

That isn't to say that seniors are forced to eat at specific times. Seniors are generally free to eat when they'd like, especially if they have food in their living area. Our brand of assisted living focuses on giving you the freedom to live how you'd like.

Here at Addington Place of Carroll, we give our residents everything they need to prepare their meals. These include:

  • An in-room kitchenette
  • A refrigerator and freezer to store food
  • A dishwasher to handle any necessary cleaning
  • A microwave for quicker, easier meals or warming up leftovers

According to the National Poll on Healthy Aging, about 71% of seniors enjoy cooking. If you don't, we also offer in-room dining for our residents to enjoy. These make it easy to have meals on your hour, which also helps to ensure easy socialization.

Personalization to Meal Services

A common myth is that assisted living communities offer the same food at all times to everyone. These rumors lead to an impression that mealtimes are dismal, with generic, easy-to-make food served on bland trays.

Rest assured that these are myths that come from misinformation or ignorance. The vast majority of assisted living communities take pride in preparing wholesome, healthy meals for their residents, just as we do.

Among the many reasons for this, the most important is that seniors need a balanced, nutritious diet to ensure their health. According to the USDA, seniors with a balanced diet reduce the risk of many health conditions. These include, but are not limited to:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart and cardiovascular diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Stress and hypertension

Personalization allows communities to tailor their senior dining options to what they need. Vegetarians or those with allergies are accommodated to match their needs. Those with a medical need for certain foods - or to avoid certain foods - are also tailored exceptionally well.

Menu Feedback Sessions

Menu feedback sessions are commonly held by Carroll, Iowa, retirement communities to receive feedback. These sessions allow community members to discuss what food items are on the menu and whether they would like them to stay. Among the many questions, some feedback questions include:

  1. What items would you like to see more of?
  2. What food items do you think we're lacking?
  3. Are there certain items you want for certain events?
  4. What sort of holiday food would you like?
  5. Would you like more options for food between meals?

Some communities also hold large meetings where everyone will speak with each other. These are a great social exercise to discuss culinary delights with your friends and neighbors.

Others may send out a questionnaire for community members to complete. These two methods all have the same end result of improving your senior dining options.

Socializing in Assisted Living

When you're in assisted living in Carroll, Iowa, it can sometimes feel like a struggle to socialize. Thankfully, meals give us a great way to do that.

Mealtime is a way for you and your closest friends to sit and enjoy some time together. It's a respite from the rest of your schedule while you all relax, enjoy food, and catch up.

It's also a perfect time for you to meet new people and talk with them. Meals and social outings let you branch your social circle out and experience new things.

At Addington Place of Carroll, we do our best to encourage socializing at all times. We include an activity calendar for our residents so that they know what's always available.

These events include a variety of different things to make sure everyone has something. Some of our many events include:

  • Card clubs, puzzles, and board games
  • Physical games like Ball Toss and Catch
  • Movie days with popcorn in our social Living Room
  • Rosary on the Radio, Catholic Mass, and more religious services
  • Celebrating birthdays for residents

Our events tend to run from early in the morning, usually starting at 8 in the morning. They'll go until about 6:30 PM most days, though there is some variation.

Socializing in Mealtime

Our residents enjoy an in-room dining experience so that they can have the meal they want on their time. While this can feel antisocial to some, we have plenty of culinary socializing.

During the Christmas season, we enjoy hot cocoa and snacks together. We also enjoy many events where we enjoy coffee together and have snacks.

We're also proud of our ice cream socials, which provide our favorite flavors for anyone who would like to enjoy them. If you aren't a fan of ice cream, you'll love the cookies we include instead.

In short, Addington Place of Carroll has dozens of ways we encourage socializing and culinary delight. We're happy to blend the two to provide entertainment, wholesome socialization, and fun.
